Honoring Seaman Recruit Samantha BarajasGarcia, a native of Visalia, California, is a student at NETC, learning the necessary skills needed to be a boatswain’s mate.

As a boatswain’s mate (BM), BarajasGarcia is responsible for the upkeep and preservation of Navy ships. BMs also handle cargo and conduct small boat operations.

BarajasGarcia, a 2021 Redwood High School graduate, joined the Navy four months ago.

“I joined the Navy for the health and educational benefits,” said BarajasGarcia. “Seeing how my mother struggled raising me, motivated me to jump start my life at a young age. The Navy was the best decision for me because of all the options it afforded me. It will teach me how to be independent and set me up for success both professionally and personally.”
