Local News of Tulare and Kings Counties

Keith Winkler of the Kings county health department addressed the board of supervisors yesterday about recent information that shows there’s been 10 birth defects reported in Kings County – not 6 that state officials reported last month. That confirmation came after the Greenaction environmental group reported last week that it had discovered the additional birth defects. Some claim that the birth defects have been caused by Chemical Waste Management’s plant in Kettleman Hills. State officials have apologized to the county for provided the wrong information and they plan to return to the board of supervisors to report on the new information.

Three people are recovering from inhaling nauseous fumes at an assisted living home in Southwest Fresno. Firefighters were called out to the Ruby Valley Care Facility because residents reported an unknown odor. They evacuated the home when some residents complained of shortness of breath. Investigators say the building had recently been re-tarred and the fumes made their way through the ventilation system.

Portions of Napa, Sonoma and Solano counties have been placed under quarantine to halt the spread of the European grapevine moth, which was detected in Napa County last fall. The quarantine prohibits farmers and the general public from moving host plants from the 162 square-mile zone. The pest attacks grapes and other fruit. One grower in the Oakville area lost his entire crop to the moth last fall. At the same time, traps to catch the moth are being installed all over the state to check for any additional infestations.

More than $400,000 was raised yesterday as thousands of volunteers sold the Kids Day edition of the Fresno Bee. The money goes to support Children’s Hospital of Central California. The total collected this year was $427,000.

The Tulare County Board of Supervisors has voted to create a new policy on meal and transportation reimbursements. Last month, the Visalia Times Delta published a report that was critical of the way Supervisors use county money and alleged that supervisors were violating the Brown Act by meeting together as a group outside of board chambers. Supervisors have denied that they are doing anything wrong. The draft report will be submitted in the next 2 weeks.
